Birth

Having children is both a religious obligation and the crown of human life. The birth of a Jewish child is thus greeted with rituals that are both joyful and meaningful. The rituals of naming a child, b'rit milah (circumcision) and the b'rit bat (entering the covenant) give voice to the powerful feelings that surround the birth of every baby; gratitude, awe, humility, continuity and hope.

At Temple Chai, we customarily celebrate a child's naming during Friday evening Shabbat services with the exception of the monthly Family Service. We welcome member as well as non-member families to celebrate a naming in the sanctuary. Also, schedule permitting, the clergy will conduct a naming ceremony at a congregant's home.

For more information on scheduling a baby naming ceremony at Temple Chai during a Friday night Shabbat service, please contact the temple office, and ask to speak to Peggy Buchman, our Clergy Secretary.
